Prof. Marek Masnyk Elected New Rector of the UO
Professor Marek Masnyk, incumbent Vice-Rector for Academic and Student Affairs has been elected the new Rector of the University of Opole. The election for the post of the Rector of UO took place on March 7 in the lecture theatre of the Faculty of Economics. Professor Masnyk defeated his rival, Dr Adam Szymanski, with 90 votes to 3.
The election of Vice-Rectors will be held on 17 March 2016, on Thursday at 1 p.m. in room 23 of the Faculty of Economics UO.
Professor Marek Masnyk was born in 1956 in Namysłów. He has been connected with our Alma Mater since his student times: after his secondary school final exams he started studying history at the Pedagogical College in Opole, the forerunner of the UO. Having graduated from the College he started his academic career at his Alma Mater.
Professor Marek Masnyk specialises in Polish and general history of the 19th and 20th century. His research is focused on the ethno-lingual issues of the Polish-German borderland, Silesia in the Polish political thought, and socio-political history of Silesia in the 19th and 20th century. At present he conducts research on Silesia - as a historically formed macro-region on the border of several nations and states, of multi-ethnic and multi-cultural character - in the thought and work of local national leaders.
He is an author of over 100 academic publications, including 7 books, and 9 monographs; he has supervised 13 PhD dissertations. Professor Masnyk has been the Head of the Chair of History of Silesia in the Institute of History for the last twenty years. Recently Professor Masnyk has become a member of the Committee on Historical Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences in the years 2015-2018.
