It is with great sadness that we have to inform you that Janusz Malak, PhD, D.Litt., Assoc. Prof.  passed away on 28 January 2023.

Prof. Malak was a teaching fellow at the Institute of Linguistics at the University of Opole.  He taught with great commitment for many years, sharing his knowledge with students.

He was not only a respected teacher, and a great scholar, but above all a good person.

Janusz Malak, PhD, D.Litt., Professor at the University of Opole, linguist, English language specialist, and long-time research and teaching staff member at the University of Opole. 

He was born on 17 November 1957. In 1982, he obtained his MA and in 1992, he was granted his PhD degree in English linguistics on the basis of his doctoral dissertation entitled Syntactically untransformable participial constructions with habban and beon in Old English.

Prof. Malak received his postdoctoral degree in 2009 on the basis of his habilitation dissertation entitled Derivational conspiracy: the demise of subjectless clauses in English. His research interests focused on the grammar and history of the English language.

He was the author of dozens of academic publications, including the monograph Participal constructions with habban and beon in Old English.

From 1989, he was employed at the Higher School of Education in Opole and then at the University of Opole, where he held following positions: assistant lecturer (1989-1992), assistant professor (1992-2017), associate professor (2017-2018), senior lecturer (2018-2021), and professor at the University of Opole (from 2021). 

In the academic year 1992/1993, he was Head of the Department of English. In the following years, he was Head of the Department of Linguistics (1993-1996), Deputy Director of the Institute of English Philology (1993-2012), Deputy Director for Part-Time Studies (2002-2005), and Deputy Director for Science at the Institute of English Studies (2012-2016).
