On 7 December 2022, the Institute of Linguistics of the UO signed a cooperation agreement with the Opole Silesia Museum in Opole.  As a result, the institute's students will expand their knowledge of specialist vocabulary specific to cultural institutions, while the museum will be provided with translations of, for example, permanent exhibitions.

The agreement was signed by Prof. Jolanta Nocoń, Director of the Institute of Linguistics, Dr Elżbieta Szymańska-Czaplak, Dean of the Faculty of Philology of the UO, and by Iwona Solisz, Director of the Opole Silesia Museum.

“This cooperation will certainly be beneficial for both parties to the agreement," says Dr Mariola Majnusz-Stadnik, Head of the Chair of German Studies at the Institute of Linguistics, who is responsible for the implementation of the signed agreement on the part of the university. “Our students will be able to learn not only the specifics of the work of a cultural institution but also the specialist vocabulary specific to this type of institution, translating into German, for example, descriptions of permanent exhibitions, texts for museum adverts or texts for the website. The museum, on the other hand, thanks to our cooperation, will gain translations of materials and exhibitions aimed at visitors from German-speaking countries."

The aim of the signed agreement, as stated in the document, is to expand the knowledge of specialist foreign-language vocabulary, for example in the field of research or popular science.  Students will also be able to learn about the work of the staff of cultural institutions and the functioning of the museum, and to obtain information on possible careers in the fields of culture, history or cultural tourism.

The university also committed itself to, inter alia, giving academic supervision of the translations provided by the students, and the museum to allowing students to visit the institution free of charge.
