Ruth Zimmerling - Emeritus Professor of Political Theory at the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz, Germany. From 2008 to 2011, she was in charge of the tripartite Europa Master programme at the University of Mainz, together with partners from Opole and Dijon. She has a Master's degree in mathematics and economics (1978), a Master's degree in Islamic philology (1982) and a PhD in political science (1989). In 2002, she was awarded a habilitation and the venia legendi in political science from the Darmstadt University of Technology.
Prior to joining the University of Mainz, she held teaching positions at the universities in Frankfurt am Main, Cologne, Stuttgart, Bamberg, Darmstadt and Hamburg. She lectured as a visiting professor in: Brasília, Mexico City, Madrid, Graz, Cardiff, Opole and Middlebury.
From 2005 to 2010, she was a co-editor of the "Politische Vierteljahresschrift" (PVS), the flagship journal of the German Political Science Association (DVPW).
In addition to dozens of articles published in German, English and Spanish, she edited the collective volume 'Globalization and Democracy' (2005) and co-edited (with Michael Becker) the volume 'Politics and Law' (2006). Her research interests focus on conceptual issues (power, influence, corruption, globalisation, rationality, reason) and democratic theory.
