Collection for Afghan girls is still on
New prospects have opened up for the fifteen Afghans who were taken care of by the University of Opole after their evacuation from Taliban-occupied Kabul last August. Students pursue studies, take up traineeships, some also already work, parents take up jobs and families have moved into rented flats in Opole. All the adults are attending the Polish language course at the Faculty of Philology. The children, on the other hand, have learnt communicative Polish and have been admitted to one of Opole schools.
Last year, due to the fact that the integration of Afghans into kindergarten and, above all, into school requires a lot of attention, a special integration programme of intensive Polish language learning and gradual entering into regular education was prepared in cooperation with one of educational institutions where both a primary school and kindergarten are run.
Hajar (11 years old), Elhan (9), Jannat (6), Raihan (3) and occasionally Zulaikha (2 years old - too young for kindergarten) worked under the care of a specially hired teacher who taught them Polish and made sure that the girls were entering their age groups gradually and effectively. Thanks to these intensive efforts, the children communicate efficiently in Polish and were prepared to continue their education in one of the public primary schools from September this year.
Due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the attention of those helping since the beginning of this year has focused on the refugees from across our eastern border in need of help, and the collection we had organised for the education of the Afghan girls has come to a standstill.
That is why we are once again asking the academic community for financial assistance for the Afghans evacuated from Kabul in 2021. They are now on their own, working and supporting themselves, but the costs of the girls' very intensive education are still outstanding.
We would be grateful for any donation.
