Complex cardiac procedure streamed live from University Hospital to USA

A complex cardiac procedure in a patient with renal failure was transmitted from the University Hospital in Opole online to the US.  

Cardiologists from the University Hospital in Opole - Jerzy Sacha, MD, PhD, and Przemysław Lipski, MD, performed a complex coronary intervention, which was live-streamed by the Americans on the most important cardiology platform CampPCI.

“The extraordinary aspect of the procedure was that it was performed almost without the use of contrast with circulatory support by means of the impella heart pump in a patient with renal failure (who had been on dialysis for 2 weeks)," reports Jerzy Sacha, MD, PhD, Head of the Haemodynamic Research Laboratory at the University Hospital in Opole and associate professor at the Opole University of Technology.    

“As a result, it was possible not only to improve heart function, but also kidney function, resulting in the patient being able to dispense with dialysis,” continues Prof. Sacha.

He adds that doctors from the USA who observed the procedure in real time were impressed with the results obtained by the Opole team, particularly with the renal effect, as the opposite situation is usually observed, i.e. complex operations on the heart carry a risk of kidney damage.

“So far, Opole Cardiology is the only centre in Poland that has been invited by the Americans from the most important cardiology platform (CampPCI - Coronary Artery & Myocardial Protected PCI) to transmit a procedure," notes Prof. Sacha.
