University Sports Gala - Rector Awarded
On October 19, 2017 the annual University Sports Gala was held in the Exhibition and Congress Centre in Opole. During the Gala, the latest sports achievements of students from Polish universities were presented and awarded. The role of the supporting institutions was also recognised and rewarded.
One of the awards went to Prof. Marek Masnyk, Rector of the UO, for supporting academic sport. The support was primarily focused on the badminton section systematically achieving successes in the national and international arena.
The badminton section has won four academic championships and five cups in Polish University Championships in the years 2013-2017. Students playing in the badminton section have also won 13 medals, including five golds in the last four years in the European Universities Games.
In turn, women’s volleyball team won the Polish Universities Championship and the bronze medal in the general classification last year. The Uni Opole volleyball team won the competition in second League, and taking first place they have entered the First League.
Those successes would not have been possible without the support of Prof. Marek Masnyk, however, the award was also granted in recognition to the coaches and activists of the badminton section - Henryk Hołodnik and of the volleyball section - Patryk Fogiel.
Currently, the University Sport Association of Poland (AZS) has 42 thousand members in 250 clubs. The University Sports Gala was hosted by the AZS of the Opole University of Technology.
