Current Issues of Sustainable Development

The Chair of Economic Geography and Spatial Management and the Department of Economic Theory of the Faculty of Economics of the UO organized the Seventeenth International Conference of the series: Current Issues of Sustainable Development. The main theme was: Different Views on Sustainable Development: What Is Really Sustainable?

The conference focused on issues related to the dilemmas and different approaches to building the foundations of sustainable development. Speakers discussed, inter alia, the issues of sustainable energy production and projects aimed at the creation of sustainable communities, the challenges faced by developing countries, the use of technology for sustainable development, the need for a multidisciplinary approach to practical and theoretical research on sustainable development, as well as more detailed case studies related to the discussed issues. The presentations were discussed on the forum under the moderation of Prof. Peter Schmuck (University of Göttingen, Germany), DI Markus Vill (University of Applied Sciences in Zittau/Gȍrlitz, Germany), prof. Joosta Platje (WSB in Wrocław, Poland), Professor Karol Kociszewski (University of Economics in Wrocław, Poland), Dr Michał Ptak (University of Economics in Wrocław, Poland), as well as Dr Monika Paradowska (University of Opole, Poland).

Conference participants came from different parts of the world: China, Mexico, Denmark, Germany, Portugal, Ukraine, Russia, Lithuania, Iran, and Afghanistan. Conference special guests included: Prof. Dr Peter Schmuck, representing the University of Göttingen, Germany), David Berger from the University of Roskilde, Denmark), as well as Prof. Jinming Sha from Fujian Normal University, China, with which the University of Opole carries out an effective scientific cooperation.

The main organizers of the Current Issues of Sustainable Development were: Prof. Janusz Słodczyk, Dr Monika Paradowska, Dr Bartosz Fortuński, and Mateusz Musiał, as well as Marcelina Tacica, together with the members of Student Sustainable Development Research Group - oikos Opole.

Co-organizers included: University of Applied Sciences Zittau/Goerlitz, Research Institute of Siauliai University, Lithuania), the Inter-University Sustainable Development Research Programme (IUSDRP), the Polish Association of Environmental and Natural Resource Economists.

All participants were looking forward to cooperating next year in order to, inter alia, broaden the international scope of the Conference, as well as to develop Economic and Environmental Studies journal. 

 The Conference took place on 24-25 April, 2017.
