A dream has come true and a little NASA
- Opening a hybrid operating room is a dream come true for our doctors, - said Dariusz Madera during the ceremony. - We are proud that together we have managed to achieve this. I would like to thank all those who contributed to this, in particular Deputy Voivode Violetta Porowska and Professor Wiesława Piątkowska-Stepaniak, who put a lot of energy into obtaining funds for this purpose. We have joined the group of very few hospitals in Poland that have such a room.
- This hybrid room is our common good, and its opening is a reason for great joy - said Prof. Marek Masnyk, welcoming the guests. - It is all the more joyful that this is happening at a time of widespread inadequacies in health care. In the meantime, we have managed to take another step in equipping the University Hospital with the technology of the 21st century.
- We now have some NASA here, - joked Vice Voievod Porowska.
Professor Wiesław Piątkowska-Stepaniak stressed that currently cardiologists, cardiac surgeons and vascular surgeons have the most modern equipment to save the health and life of patients. - And our medical students will also benefit greatly, having the opportunity to enter this room or at least observe what is happening in it through video media, - she said.
What is a hybrid operating theatre?
The hybrid operating room combines elements of the operating room and surgery for low-invasive treatments. It is a place where vascular surgeons, cardiologists, cardiac surgeons and anaesthetists can work at the same time. Hybrid room allows you to perform treatments combining classical open surgery with minimally invasive surgery.
It is possible thanks to equipping the room, among others, with imaging equipment, which allows for minimally invasive treatments and accelerates diagnostics, resulting in shortening the duration of the operation.
Hybrid surgery room significantly increases the patient's safety, because if during the procedure it turns out that it is necessary to open the patient and perform the operation using the traditional method, it can be done immediately, without the need to transport him to another place.
Rebuilding and refurbishing the operating theatre rooms for the hybrid room at the University Hospital was possible thanks to financing from the POLKARD - Programme for Prevention and Treatment of Cardiovascular Diseases. Under this programme, the Ministry of Health provided the UH with a grant of nearly PLN 4 million for the implementation of the task - Equipping the hybrid operating room for vascular surgery, cardiology and cardiac surgery in 2017.
As a result, the University Hospital purchased a digital angiograph for heart and vascular examination, a haemofiltration apparatus, an extracorporeal circulation apparatus and an ultrasound apparatus.
The reconstruction of the operating theatre, the installation and commissioning of the medical equipment, and the training of the staff were financed from the UH's own funds.
The total cost of creating the hybrid room amounted to PLN 6.2 million.
