Opole University was established in 1994 as a result of joining one of the best Polish pedagogical academies – The Higher Pedagogical College (1950-1994), the first academy in the Opole region that originated from the State Higher Pedagogical College (1950-1954) moved from Wrocław and the Theological-Pastoral Institute in Opole (the Opole branch of the Catholic University in Lublin) established in 1981 and relying on several dozen years of experience and work of Theological Seminary in Nysa (where the academic staff of the former Theological Department of John Casimir University in Lvov used to work).
Opole University is a dynamically developing academic center. In 1994, it began its activity offering courses at four independent departments and now there eight of them: Faculty of Philology; Faculty of History and Pedagogy, Faculty of Theology, Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Information Techniques, Faculty of Natural and Technical Sciences, Faculty of Economics, Faculty of Law and Administration, Faculty of Chemistry.
One of the distinctive assets of Opole University is its attractive location in a multicultural region. Opole Province, as an area of socio-cultural borderland, fascinates with its diversity and cultural variety and offers most attractive material to conduct research. This co-existence of four cultures: Polish, Silesian, German and Moravian, attracts researchers from different countries and makes studying in Opole University a truly rewarding experience, especially as it comes to such disciplines as linguistics, sociology, psychology, folklore studies, cultural studies, political science, history. Another strong asset is the Dinosaur Silesaurus! It was in Krasiejów near Opole where the sensational discovery of Triassic pre-dinosaurs was made in recent years, thus providing a unique possibility, even on the world scale, of conducting palaeontological research of the remains of dinosaurs preserved here.
Research, scholarship, and creative activities promote development through the international co-operation and knowledge applications in the natural and applied sciences, social sciences, arts, humanities. Opole University is developing international cooperation on the basis of agreements with universities from, among others, the USA, Germany, Great Britain, France, Russia, Ukraine, Sweden, Italy, Australia, Slovakia. As well as research workers, students go to studies and trainings abroad as part of various exchange programs and participate in international seminars and conferences.
