With the end of the last academic year, Prof. Krystyna Czaja ended her long career at the University of Opole. On this occasion, in recognition of her scientific achievements, a special seminar was held on 15 October 2025.
Professor Krystyna Czaja is a chemist and academic teacher who has been affiliated with our university since 1973. Her posts included: Head of the Chemical Technology Department (1990–1999), Director of the Institute of Chemistry (1999–2005), Head of the Chair of Chemical Technology and Polymer Chemistry (1999-2024), Vice-Rector for Science and Financial Policy of the UO (2005-2008) and Rector of the UO (2008-2012).
‘Professor Czaja is one of those scientists who are able to combine research passion with responsibility for the development of the institution and the scientific community,’ emphasised Prof. Elwira Bisz, who delivered the laudation during the seminar. ‘Her research work on polymer chemistry and technology has resulted in significant achievements recognised both nationally and internationally, shaping successive generations of chemists.’
Prof. Bisz also drew attention to research integrity, which Prof. Czaja combined with openness to new ideas and the needs of economic practice. At the same time, she pointed out that her activities were not limited to academic work, because as rector of the UO she gave the university a new dynamic of development. At that time, the building of the Faculty of Chemistry was thoroughly renovated and gained modern facilities.
‘She is remembered by her colleagues and students as a person of great culture, kindness and class,’ said Prof. Bisz. ‘She was demanding, but fair. Consistent, yet open and cordial. For many of us, you are an authority figure, a mentor, a guide, and a model of a scientist devoted to their work and the people with whom they create it. Your achievements are an enduring part of the history of the Institute of Chemistry.’
Then the floor was taken Prof. Czaja herself and Prof. Jacek Lipok, Rector of the UO. There was also time for trivia and reminiscences, commemorative inscriptions and the presentation of flowers and souvenirs. The meeting was attended not only by people associated with chemistry, but with the university as a whole and even the wider community.
Professor Czaja’s scientific speciality was the chemistry and technology of polymers and polymer materials. She has nearly 200 scientific publications to her credit, but also , among others: a textbook, scripts, patents, unpublished studies, expert reports and reports on commissioned research work. On top of this, she has successfully supervised over 100 MSc students and 16 doctoral candidates. In addition, she has reviewed 70 doctoral and post-doctoral dissertations, as well as applications for the award of the title of professor.
