State-of-the-art Simulators Soon in Opole
The high-fidelity simulators were presented on 27 March 2018 at the Opole Centre for Gynaecology, Obstetrics and Neonatology, a local birthing school. Numerous doctors from the gynaecological and obstetric hospital as well as from the University Hospital attended the event.
The most modern simulators in the world
- We have the opportunity to see and test the most advanced, state-of-the-art, high fidelity medical simulators available in the world today; this is truly the highest shelf," said Prof. Zenon Halaba, a lecturer at the UO medical faculty, the organizer of the presentation. - They are very useful both in training medical students, as well as in improving qualifications of doctors. Of particular interest is the MEDline SuperTory newborn baby simulator, which is the most technologically advanced neonatal simulator in the world. You can learn many procedures from it, above all it gives you practically unlimited opportunities for training in respiratory diseases, which are the most common problem we face with intensive care of a newborn child.
The simulator software allows you to set life parameters to a level that requires a specific medical procedure; for example, you can cause respiratory disturbances, convulsions, cyanosis, etc. You can intubate the newborn simulator 'patient', make various types of punctures, etc. You can even catheter a "boy" and a "girl" with a suitable removable genital cap.
The cost of such a simulator exceeds the price of a high class car and amounts to over 400 thousand zlotys. Other devices presented during the show, such as a simulator of an adult type Hal, worth about PLN 300 thousand, is not much cheaper. However it can be used to study many life-saving medical procedures. A separate simulator is used to teach how to intubate the patient. There were also presented trainers for learning and improving laparoscopic surgery by Laparo company.
The simulators are to be delivered to the UO
As Prof. Zenon Halaba declares, the presented simulators will be delivered to the Collegium Medicum of the University of Opole within two years. - Our university is in the process of finalizing an agreement with the Ministry of Health, which allocates quite a lot of funds to finance the equipment needed to equip medical simulation centres at universities that launch medical schools. Our medical simulation centre has ready rooms in the Collegium Medicum. I think that in two years' time our students will be using a fully equipped simulation centre..
Prof. Halaba stresses the importance of training future physicians in simulators. US data shows that 440,000 patients die every year in the US from medical errors, and that a further 3.5 million citizens suffer permanent health damage as a result. Practising the profession of doctor requires constant striving for perfection, so as to eliminate the possibility of making a mistake. Such a possibility is provided by learning in simulators, when, for example, one can intubate the simulator 'patient' up to fifty times in order to save a real person doing it flawlessly, with the proverbial eyes closed. Perfection requires training, and safe, patient-friendly training is possible with the use of simulators.
The presentation was attended by Prof. Izabella Pisarek, Vice-Rector for Academic and Student Affairs. - These devices, which we have seen here today, are fantastic and enable students to learn difficult medical procedures in laboratory conditions, - said Prof. Pisarek. Students of natural sciences and chemistry practice on materials that can be destroyed. In the case of medical students, this possibility is much more important, because it is about the safety of patients. The possibility of training future physicians in simulators is invaluable.
