The President of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Prof. Jerzy Duszyñski, awarded Prof. Arkadiusz Nowak from the Institute of Biology UO a scientific prize for editing the monograph "Illustrated Flora of Tajikistan and adjacent areas" and the results of a research programme on flora and fauna of Central Asia, initiated by Prof. Nowak and implemented for the last 16 years.

The award is a token of appreciation for scientific achievements and efforts to build a brand of Polish science in the world. The co-editor of the monograph, Prof. Marcin Nobis from the Jagiellonian University, who has been involved in the research programme from the beginning, is also a laureate of the award

Research in Central Asia has been conducted by Prof. Nowak since 2006, when together with Prof. Grzegorz Kusha, and Dr. Grzegorz Kłys they went on their first research expedition to Tajikistan. That expedition resulted in the signing of a partnership agreement between the then Chair of Biosystematics and the Faculty of Biology at the University of Dushanbe. So far, as a result of the research, apart from the above-mentioned monograph, Prof. Nowak's team has published over 100 papers indexed in WoS on the flora, vegetation, taxonomy and conservation biology of this region of the world
